During my school years tuesdays were my favourite evenings. Me and my brothers spent tuesdays eating dinner and chatting with Nanny J which meant perfectly crispy jacket potatoes, omelettes cooked just the way we liked them and, unfailingly, The Paul O’Grady Show. This is testament to just how welcoming, hilarious and gastronomically gifted our beautiful nan was. My strongest memory of her later life is her resilience, as even into her nineties she would trek to Sainsbury’s solo, solve tough maths problems in seconds and somehow manage to beat the entire family at Bananagrams. Even while struggling with Alzheimer’s she’d remember the small details about me and my brothers’ lives and would ask for updates because she loved us so much it seemed to bypass her memory loss. The world feels incomplete to me now because so much of its goodness I discovered with and through this amazing lady. Whenever I think of tortoises, marzipan, greenhouses, syrup tart, scrabble, cats, cat flaps, typewriters, gourmet custard, pinnies, patios, cranberry jam, Pass The Bomb, boxing day, omelettes and tuesdays I will immediately think of and endlessly miss our incredible and much adored Nanny J.
